I'm glad you found the resources on WebJunction. Try posting a question to the discussion boards ... you might get an answer to some of your questions, http://www.webjunction.org/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=99. The community leader interview guide is also a great resource, http://www.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=11959

A journal article that's locked up tighter than Fort Knox?! Surely you jest! Yes, that was a bit of sarcasm. Sad to say, I only figured out a few years ago that you can even cut and paste from a PDF, so don't feel too bad about that.

I really like examining the concept of social capital in your paper, and I think you can really do some good things with that. I think your straw people are a bit too easy to knock down, but that may be my biases talking. If you focus in on a particular argument or author, that may be better.

A beautifully organized outline indeed. I especially like how you have a section on theory based on readings from class and how you are bringing all we've learned in class into what seems will be a fantastic paper. Your outline is definitely a solid road map that will get you to an awesome outcome!

Great outline-looks like an interesting paper but bibliography might benefit from some non-service learning sources to balance it out.

Sheryl,

This is a very good post. I appreciate the way you've highlighted the difficulty with concepts that we take for granted. I think you did a good job explaining what a password is, and I don't know that I could really explain it to someone who didn't understand the concept. In your situation, I might refer to some cultural artifact, such as a movie or TV show, but that's really difficult when the person isn't originally from the U.S. and probably doesn't have the same "cultural IQ" as you (or I) do. I hope the service learning experience has been better for you than it has been for me.

I really appreciate your comment here about the use of the Google tool bar and the impact it could potentially have on privacy rights. Once we all begin clicking buttons in order to get to information we fail to read the privacy statements--I know I do particularly in a time crunch! This is one of the main things people sacrifice for convenience and immediate connection.

It is easy to drift into cynicism; perhaps the challenge is to sniff out the few hopeful glimmers amidst the piles discouraging facts.

This is *another* great post. I grew up in BC and attended elementary and highschool on the campus of UBC. I am very excited to be going back to UBC in late January to do a public lecture and a training in qualitative data analysis. This will be followed by a third attempt to go heli skiing with my brother and best friend from high school. Last year we were rained out twice!
